Judging player development on winning teams can be a challenge. After all, on a good team, rookies and two-year guys will rarely see the floor due to the emphasis on winning.

So, game film might be sparse, and the minutes we do get can often happen when the results in a game are a foregone conclusion. Last year, Dalton Knecht’s minutes dipped in the second half and he struggled in those games.

After a Summer League where he looked rather pedestrian, his stock is as low as ever. That is saying a lot, given the Lakers traded him in February, before taking him back after Mark Williams failed a physical.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick, however, has some context to give on Knecht’s recent struggles that paints a rosier picture of him heading into his sophomore season.
