When you’ve been around a long time, as I have, the same topics tend to recur. One of those is NIMBY , which translates into Not In My Backyard.

Here’s a definition of NIMBY I wrote a decade ago: “It’s great that I’m living here, but enough is enough and we don’t want you.”

I’ve seen it dozens of times in my career: A neighborhood springs up, people settle into their homes. It’s nice. It’s cozy. Then, a developer proposes a new neighborhood on the next empty plot of land.

People from the established neighborhood flock to the next municipal meeting, waving a laundry list of reasons the proposed development should be axed.

I’m not saying they are wrong. I’m not saying they are right. I’m just saying it’s how it is.
