CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Coach college basketball long enough and you’re bound to be scarred by an NCAA Tournament selection snub — real or perceived. So it’s no surprise that a majority of Division I big whistles have long endorsed expansion of the 68-team field.
They may see that vision realized as soon as 2026-27, with a 72- or 76-team bracket.
Contrary to what pound-the-table advocates and opponents would have you believe, this would be neither bliss nor misery.
March Madness would still commence immediately after conference tournaments and finish on Masters Monday. Folks wouldn’t tune out or stop entering bracket challenges.
But no matter how discerning the selection committee, the larger the field, the greater the chances of imposters, of teams that muddled through their regular seasons
