Tropical Storm Chantal is the only storm to make landfall in the United States this season.

Since Chantal, storms Erin, Humberto, Imelda, and soon Jerry have curved or will be curving away from the U.S. due to a dip in the jet stream known as a trough. Advertisement

Troughs typically bring cooler and drier air from the north down to the south, resulting in a cool or cold front at the surface.

This trough setup has been diving south, a pattern usually seen in late September into October, but it started appearing in August this year.

This phenomenon has been acting as a GPS, steering tropical systems away from the U.S.

Fortunately, another cold front arriving late this week will help steer Jerry away as well.
