The New York Giants pulled off a surprising win over the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night at MetLife Stadium to open Week 6 NFL action.
A pair of rookies were the driving forces on offense for the victory. Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 195 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score while running back Cam Skattebo made three trips to the end zone to power the Giants' offense to a standout performance.
Dart's primetime debut almost took a turn, though. The first-round pick took a hard hit on a sack in the third quarter and was slow to get up.
After the training staff came to check on him, Dart popped up and jogged off the field to the medical tent. He was evaluated for a concussion and came back into the game minutes later.
That quick turnaround's garnering scrutiny the day after the Giants' win. Here's what we know about the situation.
Jaxson Dart concussion check recap
Dart was in the medical tent for multiple minutes after coming off the field. Before he exited the tent for the Giants' next drive on offense, coach Brian Daboll poked his head inside to check on what was happening – something which NFL coaches are forbidden from doing.
The Giants coach was also seen having a heated discussion with the team's physician Dr. Scott Rodeo while Dart was in the tent.
Brian Daboll's explanation
The Giants coach explained after the game that he was considering calling a timeout to go for it on fourth down if Dart was cleared to return to the game.
“There’s a lot of emotions, and I certainly am an emotional guy. I apologized directly to our team physician," he said. "I just wanted his (Dart's) a-- out there if he was OK. But I wanted the process – like we were getting ready to go for it on a potential fourth down. I would have burned a timeout if he could have gone out there."
Daboll stated that he was asking how long it would take for Dart to be cleared and wasn't getting a clear answer.
"I was asking, 'How long is it going to take?'" he said. "So again, you want your guy out there – not at risk of anything else. But, you know, he [Rodeo] came out, 'I think he’s going to be good.' I'm like, 'Is he going to be good, or not? I'm gonna call a timeout on fourth down and go for the (first down), you know?"
He added that he apologized to Rodeo and said he was in the wrong.
NFL statement on Dart concussion protocol
In a statement obtained Friday by USA TODAY Sports, the NFL said they will be investigating what happened with Dart in the tent on Thursday night:
"The NFL initiated a review of the application of the concussion protocol involving New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during last night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. That review will be conducted jointly with the NFLPA under the parties’ collective bargaining agreement."
It's unclear what punishment Daboll may face if found in the wrong.
