As a Canadian, it goes without saying hockey runs deep in our national identity — but in my family, it was always baseball. While other kids laced up skates, we were grabbing gloves, listening to games on the radio and debating over who were the best ball players during backyard barbecues. The Patersons were, and still are, a multi-generation baseball family. And this October, as the Blue Jays continue their playoff run with the World Series in sight, I’ve found myself reflecting on how this game has connected my past and present in the most unexpected way.
