LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Friday marked a significant milestone in Jefferson County’s history with the swearing-in ceremony of the first Black sheriff, David James.
Following the passing of Sheriff John Aubrey in September, Mayor Greenberg appointed his deputy mayor to that role. On Friday, David James was officially sworn into the Sheriff position to serve the remainder of Aubery’s term. Steve Heely was officially sworn in as Chief Deputy.
With one hand on the bible and his heart in the community, Jefferson County’s newest sheriff called Friday, the starting whistle of his new role.
“This office does not belong to me. It belongs to the people,” Jefferson County Sheriff David James said.
