Slapping a handcuffed woman after she spat mucus into his eye was done for one purpose, testified the Wilmington police officer charged with striking that same woman during an arrest last year.

Sgt. Caro Spearman told jurors he struck the intoxicated woman to stop her from spitting at him and other officers arresting her that night and possibly spreading a communicable disease with her spit.
