CITYWIDE — TWO BROOKLYN ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE PUSHING AGAINST MAYORAL CANDIDATE ZOHRAN MAMDANI’S plans to curtail Gifted and Talented Programs in NYC Public Schools. Assemblymember William Colton, D-47, emphasized the programs’ importance, saying they should be expanded rather than cut.
Colton, a former educator, is currently sponsoring legislation in Albany that would require the city’s Department of Education to enhance its Gifted and Talented offerings in every New York City school district across the city in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Councilmember Susan Zhuang is drafting legislation, dubbed the “Education for Every Child Bill,” that would mandate that the Mayoral Office for Child Care and Early Childhood Education investigate why such a small percentage of pre-K students
