Army has been playing football since 1890 but Charlotte is a relative newcomer, having become a Football Bowl Subdivision member in 2015. The 49ers joined the American Conference in 2023 and Army a year later, so this will be the first meeting between the two schools.

College football teams will conduct video study of opponents well in advance of meeting, in an effort to gain tendencies, but Army coach Jeff Monken said it's a bit harder to face a team for a first time.
