Thompson Valley’s No. 4 doubles line of sophomores Matthew Woodcox and Gatlyn Clark punched their ticket to the Class 4A state tournament next week in Pueblo with a second-place finish at regionals Thursday at Mehaffey Park.
Woodcox and Clark lost in the 4A Region 4 championship match to a team from D’Evelyn, 7-5, 7-5, but avoided having to survive a playback match and qualified for state by finishing as the regional runner-up.
The duo began their run to a state spot Wednesday at North Lake Park. As the No. 3 seed, Woodcox and Clark defeated a team from University 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before a matchup with No. 2 seed Peak to Peak in the semifinals. The Eagles won a three-set marathon, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 to advance to the regional final against D’Evelyn.
