GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids has lined up a new proposed name for a city park that’s opening later this year, after a previously suggested name was rejected by city leaders due to resident opposition .

“Unity Park” is the new name that city leaders are considering for the new $2.3 million city park that’s wrapping up construction at 680 Cesar E. Chavez Ave. SW, in Grand Rapids’ Roosevelt Park neighborhood.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 21, for residents to weigh in on the new name.

Earlier this year, city leaders were considering naming the park “Navarro Plaza” to honor Miguel and Isabella Navarro , two prominent Hispanic entrepreneurs from the area. The name was chosen after it was the top vote-getter in a city poll of residents in the neighborhood.
