NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) and Rep. Gabby Salinas (D-Memphis) have joined a growing list of lawmakers calling Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee's deployment of the National Guard to Memphis unconstitutional as soldiers arrived in the city Friday.
The two lawmakers wrote a letter to Gov. Lee and Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti expressing their "deepest concerns about the legality and consequences of your decision to give President Trump permission to deploy the National Guard here in Memphis and Shelby County," the letter reads. They wrote the governor does not have the "statutory authority" to deploy the guard to Memphis and Shelby County, citing Article III, Section 5 of the Tennessee Constitution, which says, "The Militia shall not be called into service except i
