LOS ANGELES — Indie studio IFC has sent an open petition to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences asking that animal actors be considered for Oscars.

The petition highlights the performance of dogs and other animals in films, including IFC’s latest release, Good Boy, which opened earlier this month and earned about $22 million in its debut weekend, making it the studio’s second-best opening ever, according to Variety.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the important roles animals play in movies and encourage the Academy to consider ways to honor their contributions on screen.
