The owner of a four-building medical office complex in Elgin is asking for city permission to convert three-quarters of it into 34 apartment units.
Sundeep Oberoi has owned the building at 860 Summit St. for 15 years, and it’s currently zoned for office space, he told the Elgin Planning and Zoning Commission at this week’s meeting.
There four separate buildings connected by an interior walkway, with each designed to have a reception area, office space, and two to five exam rooms, Oberoi said. He is proposing that three of the four buildings be renovated for apartments to be leased at market rate, but needs city approval for code variances to move forward — a request that will go to the Elgin City Council with the commission’s recommendation.
