RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) — At the edge of Maple Grove Cemetery in Russellville, a house built in the late 1800s carries a tragic legend that time has not erased.

The Sexton House has become the setting of whispered tales of a spectral imprint that acts as a reminder of divine wrath, according to local lore.

Despite its name, no one with the surname Sexton ever lived in the house. The moniker comes from the caretaker’s role at the adjacent cemetery.

“In Kentucky, someone who takes care of a cemetery is a sexton and that’s a carry over from the British, that’s what they call their caretakers were sextons, and we’re the few places that actually call them that,” explained Logan County Public Library reference genealogy librarian, Mark Griffin. “Most just call them caretakers.”
