MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) -- You could start paying more for alcohol in the state of Alabama.
The ABC Board has approved a fee increase for liquor producers. It's called a bailment fee, which is what alcohol companies pay the ABC Board to store their products until they are put on the shelves. Some state leaders argued an increase in that fee could make for a hike at the register in liquor stores.
The ABC increased the fee to store alcohol products from 72 cents to a dollar per case of liquor. The funds will be used to help pay for a new warehouse and other expenses, according to a statement provided by the board.
“I think we oughtta get out of the liquor business at the state level and privatize- and just let the private sector handle it," said Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur).
