October has already seen the energy price cap rise increasing household bills at a time when many are preparing to turn the heating back on and energy debt is at a record high. In this perfect storm, thousands are resorting to an illegal way of saving money on energy, with money experts warning it could cost them far more than just money in the long-run.

Also known as energy theft, this tactic sees people tampering with their energy meter so that it does not properly record their usage. Around 250,000 households are estimated to be doing this ‘DIY discount’ according to Ocean Finance experts, costing the UK around £1.5billion a year and potentially adding an extra £50 to the average household’s annual bill.
