LEWISTON, N.Y. — The Bowling Green State University hockey team dropped its season opener 2-0 on the road at Niagara on Friday.

Niagara’s Maxim Muranov scored both goals in the second period for the host Purple Eagles.

The first Muranov goal came at 9:08 of the middle period and was assisted by Declan McDonnell and Ray Murakami. He then made it 2-0 on another even-strength goal, this time assisted by Mitchell Becker and Andy Reist at 15:49.

Despite the loss, BGSU held an advantage in shots on goal of 26-20. Each team was 0-for-3 on the power play.

Bowling Green goalie Cole Moore made 18 saves on 20 shots. In net for the Purple Eagles, Deivs Rolovs stopped all 26 shots.

The Falcons finish the two-game series at 5 p.m. Saturday.
