KINGSPORT, Tenn., (WJHL) - As autumn weather rolls in, so does the risk of wildfires.

Wildfire season lasts from September through December when falling leaves, drier land condition and autumn winds create perfect conditions for the smallest sparks to ignite flames.

"[Wildfires] are pretty common [in Appalachia]," said Kingsport Deputy Fire Chief Terry Arnold. We have Gatlinburg fire, they've had a couple of really big ones, and we in Kingsport have 6,000 acres at Bays Mountain. That's what we have to protect, so there's a very good possibility of those types of things happening around here."

Wildfires are commonly caused by small fires, such as grills, campfires and even cigarettes, becoming amplified by winds.
