WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A power outage is expected to affect downtown Wichita on Friday night after a grass fire led to an underground electrical vault fire near 3rd and Market, city officials said.

The Wichita Fire Department responded to the scene around 4:30 p.m. and discovered a fire in the underground electrical vault. In response, Evergy disconnected power to the vault and attempted to reroute electricity through a secondary grid.

However, Evergy was unable to restore power without temporarily shutting off electricity to the area between Murdock to Maple and Market to Seneca. The power is expected to be shut down around 10:30 p.m. and restored within an hour.
