MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A man described by the Memphis Police Department (MPD) as a "gang member and violent offender" was sentenced to four years in federal prison, MPD said.

A judge handed down that sentence to Jaylen Johnson after a joint investigation by the MPD Multi-Agency Gang Unit and the ATF. Police called Johnson "an Aggravated Assault Public Offender and one of the city's most violent repeat offenders."

His conviction stems from MPD's Aggravated Assault Initiative, an operation focused on helping police quickly capture repeat violent offenders when they reoffend.

MPD Chief C.J. Davis said Johnson's sentencing was the result of cooperation between federal and local law enforcement.
