The man accused of forcing another man to take a lethal dose of methamphetamine at gunpoint in Grand Junction in 2022 was in Mesa County District Court on Friday and is being held on a $40,000 cash only bond.

Joshua Mayfield, 27, was arrested in Cleburne County, Arkansas, in September and was charged in connection with the death of 26-year-old Kurt Abney. He has since been extradited to Mesa County.

Prosecutors argued for a high cash bond given the seriousness of the alleged crime and because Mayfield has left the state, spending time in New Mexico and Arkansas. He also had an outstanding warrant related to missing a court appearance on a citation for driving without insurance.
