HONOLULU (Island News) – The first-ever recipient of the Robert Kekaula Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Student Scholarship has officially been announced!

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced that Kye Kukahiko of University of Hawaii at Moana, was confirmed to be the first-ever recipient of the $5,000 scholarship.

The scholarship was created and funded by Robert’s ohana and friends after his death, to encourage aspiring student journalists to follow his footsteps into the career he cherished.

“My passion for video journalism was sparked by the fire that stole my town in August of 2023,” shared Kukahiko in her application for the scholarship.
