CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — After 80 years, the remains of a true American hero have returned home to Northeast Ohio . On Saturday, Platoon Sgt. Harold Weaver of Cuyahoga Falls was laid to rest.

“Platoon sergeant Harold Weaver gave the ultimate sacrifice," said Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Walters.

On May 4, 1945, Weaver was killed in action fighting for our country in the Battle of Okinawa. According to Saturday's service program, the Japanese military launched a massive counterattack against American lines, killing at least 15 men in Weaver's unit alone.

“Unfortunately, due to heavy casualties on both sides, bodies were buried in mass graves on the battlefield, with most soldiers left unidentified," said Mayor Walters.

Weaver was declared permanently non-recoverable in 1950.
