Swimming Australia have been forced to release a statement after fake quotes from champion Mollie O’Callaghan circulated on social media.

A quote attributed to O’Callaghan quickly sparked controversy when it was shared across Facebook and X.

It suggested she would not participate in the 2028 Olympics if a transgender athlete was allowed to compete.

Provocative language, including “insult” and “disgrace” was also mentioned.

But the quote was completely made up.

“There are currently fabricated quotes attributed to Dolphin Mollie O’Callaghan appearing on social media posts,” Swimming Australia said in a statement.

“At no stage has O’Callaghan been interviewed and provided commentary on transgender athletes.
