Two teenagers were seriously injured Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while riding their bikes across Highway 111 in La Quinta, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 9:05 p.m. near Highway 111 and Adams Street. Riverside County sheriff’s deputies arrived to find both teens suffering major injuries. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not available on Saturday morning.

The driver fled the scene but was later located and detained in La Quinta. Authorities identified him as Jose Villegas Orbe, 47, of Palm Springs.

Investigators believe Orbe was intoxicated at the time of the crash and say he may have also been involved in a separate hit-and-run earlier that evening in Indian Wells. According to the sherif
