**Murder Investigation Launched After Body Found in Park Fire** Police have initiated a murder investigation following the discovery of human remains in Southampton Common. The remains were uncovered after a significant fire was reported in the area. Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary responded to a call from a member of the public on Wednesday, October 8. The Major Crime Team is treating the death as suspicious. A spokesperson indicated that the remains are believed to belong to a homeless individual who had been living in the Common. There are indications that a substantial fire occurred in the same location where the body was found. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, the Senior Investigating Officer, stated, "We have allocated significant resources and specialist officers into the early stages of our investigation to enable us to identify the deceased and progress our enquiries." The area where the body was located is described as remote and overgrown, situated away from footpaths. Gillooly expressed confidence that local residents may possess crucial information that could assist the investigation. "At this time, investigators are working hard to establish a time-frame for the offence, which could potentially date back several months," he added. Authorities are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have observed smoke or fire in the vicinity. They are also seeking individuals who may have relevant video footage, such as those using GoPro cameras while running or cycling, or businesses with CCTV that might have captured people leaving the Common. Police will maintain a presence in the area, with the Neighbourhood Policing Team conducting regular patrols. Residents are encouraged to approach uniformed officers with any information. Gillooly reassured the community, stating, "We understand that this is a concerning incident for our community and officers are there to provide reassurance. We will also be attending events including the Southampton parkrun, where we will be available to speak to you." The investigation is ongoing as police work to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
