The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) system is installed slightly behind the aircraft's landing gear, which provides power to the aircraft by generating electricity from air in an emergency.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Sunday instructed airline Air India to re-examine the stowage (fitting and position) of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) in all Boeing 787 aircraft where the Power Conditioning Module (PCM) has recently been replaced.

This directive from the DGCA comes after recent technical incidents in two of Air India's Boeing 787 aircraft and the Federation of Indian Pilots' (FIP) demand to ground all of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The DGCA has also sought a detailed report from American aircraft manufacturer Boeing on measures to prevent such incidents. Addition
