On my Spotify shuffle feature, a song popped up today that reminded me of my middle brother Scott. It was “American Woman” by The Guess Who. This song was a #1 hit for the band on the Canadian charts but only reached #9 in the US, back in 1970. Burton Cummings on vocals and Randy Bachmann (future Bachmann Turner Overdrive founder) on guitar create a funky groove that is an easy sing-along.
This album, by the same name as the song, was the first record album I purchased with my own honestly earned money. Scott came to my mind because he helped me pick it out at the Grand Central store in Logan, Utah. The year was probably 1971 or 1972. He recommended it and I trusted him, and he was not wrong.
