West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock over the gang-rape of a medical student in Durgapur. She questioned how the victim, who was studying at a private medical college, was out at 12:30 AM. "The girl was studying in a private medical college. How she came out at night at 12:30? So far I know, it (the incident) happened in a forest area," she stated. Banerjee emphasized that private medical colleges must ensure the safety of their students, particularly female students, and should not allow them to be outside at night.
Three individuals have been arrested based on the victim's statement, and police are actively searching for additional suspects involved in this serious crime. Banerjee assured that those responsible would face strict punishment.
She also highlighted the need for action against crimes against women in other states, mentioning incidents in Odisha, Manipur, and Bihar. "Such incidents in other states are also condemnable. Their governments should also take stringent action," she remarked.
The Durgapur incident has drawn comparisons to the tragic case from RG Kar Medical College, where a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered last year, leading to widespread outrage. In January, the main accused in that case was sentenced to life imprisonment.
