Mamata Banerjee's Controversial Remarks on Durgapur Rape Case
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sparked controversy with her remarks following the alleged gangrape of a second-year MBBS student in Durgapur. Speaking to reporters, she suggested that girls should not be allowed to leave their college campuses at night, emphasizing the need for self-protection. The incident, which occurred outside a private medical college, has drawn significant attention and condemnation.
The student, originally from Jaleswar in Odisha, was reportedly out for dinner with a male friend when she was attacked by a group of men in a forested area near the campus. Banerjee stated, "The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night. They have to protect themselves also." She expressed shock at the incident and assured that the government has a zero-tolerance policy towards such crimes, stating, "Nobody will be spared."
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, and police are actively searching for additional suspects. Banerjee criticized the private college for allowing students to go out late, questioning how the girl was able to leave at 12:30 AM. She remarked, "Private colleges must ensure security within and around their campuses."
The Chief Minister also pointed out that similar incidents occur in other states, urging for stringent action against such crimes nationwide. She mentioned that the police have limitations in monitoring individuals' movements at night, stating, "The police cannot keep a watch on everyone."
The Durgapur police have initiated a thorough investigation, including the use of drones to search nearby areas. The college has pledged full cooperation with the authorities. The National Commission for Women has also taken notice of the incident, requesting a report from the state police within five days. The survivor is currently receiving medical care, and the investigation continues as the community grapples with the implications of this tragic event.
