A woman who stopped to check on an injured animal in the road was struck and killed Saturday night in High Point, authorities said.

According to a news release from the High Point Police Department, Tu Cam Phan, 48, stopped her vehicle in the center turn lane of Westchester Drive around 9 p.m. on Saturday.

“The preliminary investigation determined Phan stopped her vehicle in the center turn lane and got out of it to check on an injured animal that was in the roadway. While she was out of her vehicle in the travel lane, she was struck by an oncoming vehicle,” police said in the report.

Paramedics could not revive Phan. She was pronounced dead at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, the release said.
