U.S. Stock Markets Open on Columbus Day, Bond Market Closed

On Monday, October 13, U.S. stock markets will operate as usual, remaining open for business despite the observance of Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. However, the bond market will be closed, as confirmed by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Columbus Day, which falls on the second Monday in October, has been a federal holiday since 1892. It is marked by parades and celebrations that honor Italian-American heritage, according to Smithsonian Magazine. In recent years, the holiday has faced criticism due to Christopher Columbus' controversial legacy regarding Native Americans. In response, former President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2021, coinciding with Columbus Day. While Indigenous Peoples' Day is not a federal holiday, it is recognized in various cities and states across the country.

Following the Labor Day closure on September 1, Wall Street will continue its regular trading schedule until late November. The next planned closure for the stock market will occur on Thursday, November 27, in observance of Thanksgiving.

The U.S. stock market holiday schedule for 2025 includes closures for Thanksgiving on November 27 and Christmas on December 25.
