SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -Hundreds took part in the annual Walk to Defeat ALS at Hammons Field Saturday morning.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a nervous system disease that causes loss of muscle control.

While there is currently no cure, the goal is to raise money to fund education, support groups, and access to care for people with ALS and their families.

“Not a lot of people know about it. They’ve either barely heard about it or they’ve heard the name and don’t know what it is,” said attendee Foster Barron. “I think just raising the awareness of it, making sure people know, and getting more people involved to help figure it out.”

So far, Springfield has raised $53,000 for the cause. To learn more about Walk to Defeat ALS, click here .
