Drama unfolded in the northwest part of Buffalo Park on Saturday morning, Sept. 20. It wasn’t the 16 teams battling for a team title at the Four Corners Invitational, hosted by Flagstaff High School, or any individual rivalries or sprints to the finish. In fact, I don’t think anybody else saw this suspense play out.

One runner from down south did manage to find enough breath to point out to his competitor, “There’s a deer!” But even he missed the other three deer that had managed to find a gap to jaywalk between the boys varsity race leader, FHS state champion Alex Bland, and all his pursuers.
