North Ridge Elementary students and staff gathered on the south side of their building Friday afternoon to witness the results of a months-long undertaking—designing, funding and then commissioning the creation of a large fiberglass Go-Hawk statue.

“I am so excited this day has finally come,” exclaimed Jess Meier, North Ridge art teacher, who raised the idea for the statue project and has led it to fruition.

She said the project started last November with the thought that Waverly-Shell Rock could have statues of the district’s mascot, just as the state universities do. Principal Mitch Parker supported the project, and a statue group was soon off and running.
