CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An investigation into Charlotte City Council unveiled no instances of "unethical, immoral or illegal" activity by the city lawmakers, Mayor Vi Lyles announced at a press conference on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The investigation came as allegations of corruption made by councilmember Dr. Victoria Watlington and leaks revealed the city's $305,000 settlement to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Johnny Jennings.
Mayor Vi Lyles denied the allegations in May 2025, however agreed to a third-party investigation.
The city originally budgeted $25,000 for the investigation by law firm Cranfill Sumner. The report is four pages long, however, the report does not identify how information on the settlement was leaked.
