HOUSTON — Local and state leaders gathered in Montrose on Tuesday, where they vowed to fight Governor Greg Abbott's order to remove the iconic rainbow Pride crosswalks.

The colorful crosswalks at the intersection of Westheimer and Taft have become a symbol of pride and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community. They were added in 2017 and funded entirely by private donations.

But Abbott said Texas cities must remove “political ideologies” from Texas roadways, citing safety concerns and a federal advisory in July that urged states to keep intersections free of political or artistic markings. He said cities have 30 days to remove them.
