Spofforth Street swoops down towards Mosman Bay from its peak on the North Sydney thoroughfare of Military Road, eventually hitting a slope sufficiently steep that a postcard view of the city’s skyline and the Harbour Bridge rises above the houses, and then on via a winding staircase down through a beautiful and faintly eerie rainforest, which gives one the distinct impression they are trespassing.

Near the centrepoint of the bay is Mosman Rowers Club. This, for pretty much exactly a quarter of a century, was the heart of Tony Abbott country, and last night it hosted one of several launches for his new book, Australia: A History .
