Doc Films at the University of Chicago was largely the subject of my column last week, and it will be this week, but for different reasons. One of which is that I started volunteering there. Whenever there’s a 9:30 PM (or 10 PM) screening on a Saturday night, there I’ll be as a fireguard. Anyone who’s been to Doc even a few times is probably familiar with the position; the show captain, who introduces the screening and goes over the house rules, references the fireguard in these prologues.
