It is hard to know if the legendary Irish writer, who died in 1900, was thinking specifically about US President Donald Trump but he may well have been.

Trump, a man famously obsessed by Time covers, this week got what he wanted when he appeared on the cover with a glowing headline that declared the Gaza ceasefire to be “His Triumph”.

The golden light of the photo made Trump appear positively beatific: his head haloed, his face uncharacteristically contemplative.

Alas, the picture was taken from an angle everybody with an iPhone knows to avoid if they are sensitive about their wobbly bits, and Trump was not happy.
