Younger generations are increasingly losing their sense of belonging, with rates dropping significantly during the past 15 years.

The Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's has found ongoing strains in belonging, trust, and identity, especially among millennials, gen Z and those facing financial hardship.

However, the annual survey reveals social cohesion is proving resilient against financial pressures and global uncertainty.

Lead author James O'Donnell told AAP the sense of belonging has been declining over time and could be generational.

"It is related to normal social and cultural change, how we relate to nationalism and patriotism and how we identify with Australia, some of that is normal and not necessarily a cause for concern," he said.
