Joshua Millard has spent nearly a year trying to ensure that the plastic wrap, packaging materials and other plastic waste generated by his building deconstruction company don't end up in a landfill.

"We pull out the plastics as we go and then we take them to our warehouse and sort them there," explained Millard, a co-founder of Demolition Impossible Contracting. "Ideally, we'll get to a point where we're doing it in all of our projects."

The company's effort is unusual in Canada. There are few rules requiring construction contractors to sort and recycle the plastic waste generated on construction sites, meaning that most — everything from plastic packaging film to foam to siding — ends up in landfills.
