Donald Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton has been charged with mishandling classified information.
The Department of Justice indictment alleges he illegally retained documents in his home.
Mr Bolton was indicted on Thursday on charges of retaining and transmitting national defence information, marking the third time in recent weeks the Justice Department has secured criminal charges against one of the Republican president's critics.
His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The indictment, according to court records, comes after it was revealed that Bolton was under federal investigation for the potential mishandling of classified information.
