MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — In a significant policy shift, the Monongalia County Board of Education has officially reversed its ban on third-party crowdfunding, allowing schools and parent-teacher organizations (PTOs) to raise funds through online platforms like GoFundMe and Booster.
The decision, finalized in a unanimous vote at the board’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14, marks a dramatic change from the board’s 2020 policy, which prohibited such fundraising methods due to concerns over third-party fees and oversight.
The original policy, known as Policy 6605, was adopted in 2020 as crowdfunding platforms gained popularity. The board cited concerns that these platforms took a percentage of donations and that fundraising should be managed directly by the school system.
