SAN FRANCISCO — The creative relationship between Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot was charged by admiration, susceptibility and competition. But was it also charged by love?

Varieties of competitive ardor radiate powerfully from “Manet & Morisot,” a marvelous exhibition at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco (it will travel to Cleveland next year). The show is about the connections between Manet, the so-called father of impressionism, and Morisot, the groundbreaking artist who showed in seven of the eight impressionist exhibitions in the 1870s and ’80s.
