Just before Tara MacMunn was led away in handcuffs to serve her four-year sentence, the mother of three was allowed to hug her weeping daughters goodbye.

It was a touching scene in the downtown courtroom, but one so easily preventable – if only she hadn’t been drunk and speeding on that night in April 2023 when she slammed into the rear of a Toyota Rav4 in Etobicoke, killing 64-year-old Hazela Baksh and ruining two families.

MacMunn, 41, pleaded guilty in June before Superior Court Justice Katherine Corrick to impaired driving causing death. The remorseful driver said she’d received a threatening text from an ex-boyfriend saying he was armed with a gun and heading to her house. She “panicked” and was racing home in her friend’s car to ensure her daughters were safe.
