A five-year-old girl with suspected tonsillitis died hours after being sent home from hospital.

Lila Marsland's family were told by A&E doctors that she had tonsillitis after she fell ill. The child was suffering from headaches, a sore throat, a high heart rate, neck pain and limited neck movement.

She was also vomiting, felt lethargic and was unable to pass urine. Lila was discharged with antibiotics and a throat spray but was found unresponsive in her bed eight hours later.

It later emerged the youngster had died from meningitis.

Her mother has slammed the government, saying it issued a 'copy and paste' statement following the tragedy, Manchester Evening News reports.
