Standard Liege were beating Royal Antwerp 1-0 on Friday night when the match was abandoned in the 87th minute.
Referee Lothar D’Hondt was slammed by Standard's hierarchy for ordering players down the tunnel after he was struck by a plastic cup thrown from the stands at the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium.
The official, who was recently in charge of Crystal Palace's Conference League win over Dynamo Kyiv , was stood on the touchline as players protested a decision when a supporter threw the object at his back.
Players were left visibly disappointed as D'Hondt immediately called the game off with just three minutes of normal time remaining.
